A working group meeting on India-Africa health science collaboration was held from the 5^th to 7^th April 2017in New Delhi, India. 20 African scientists including Prof. Bassirou Bonfoh, Director of the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d’Ivoire (CSRS) and the research consortium Afrique One-African Science Partnership for Intervention Research Excellence (ASPIRE) attended this meeting.

The African and Indian scientists discussed the research agenda around human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis (TB) and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) under Indian-African partnership while policy makers set up the frame.

It emerged from discussions that an Indian-African collaboration needs a good science which considers the environment and social determinants as the base for health system strengthening to improve their respective population health. In addition, drug development and manufacturing using plant science and indigenous knowledge in Africa and the African capacity building in drug regulatory and property right could be the best way to guide Indian-African partnership and drug accessibility in Africa.

India wants to support stringent regulation frameworks that helps African capacity in health products manufacturing and opens many opportunities for African researchers. One of these opportunities is the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR); the premier national agency for the formulation, promotion and conduct of biomedical research in India.

This programme is to provide opportunities to foreign researchers to undertake research training in Indian labs for a duration of 1 to 6 months in the areas of importance to the country/organization concerned.
