Kick off meeting of TTP Food
Foodborne diseases have a major impact throughout the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost 1 in 10 people fall ill every year from eating contaminated food and 420 000 die as a result and almost one third (30%) of all deaths from foodborne diseases are in children under the age of 5 years.
To address this specific public health concern, the research consortium Afrique One-African Science Partnership for Intervention Research Excellence (ASPIRE) incorporated foodborne diseases and nutritional illnesses into one of its five Thematic Training Programmes (TTP) and recruited 13 fellows including 2 postdocs, 7 PhD students and 4 Master’s students. They will lead research activities to better understand foodborne diseases and to identify solutions to control and eliminate them.
To launch the relevant research activities, the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d’Ivoire (CSRS) and Afrique One-ASPIRE have organized the ‘Kick off meeting of Afrique One-ASPIRE TTP-Food’. This meeting will take place in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, from the 24th to the 26th of May 2017. It will reflect on the consolidation of the research topics of the 13 fellows with emphasis on ethical aspects, research proposal, supervisory team and training needs.
A major goal of the meeting is that participants become familiar with each other across all the research activities planned or ongoing under the TTP-Food. It will also offer an opportunity to prepare the upcoming Afrique One-ASPIRE management board meeting in September 2017 in Arusha, Tanzania.
